FOR RELEASE ON APRIL 27, 2005

Democracy in Lebanon Establishes Web Presence

April 27, 2005 --

To celebrate the liberation of Lebanon from foreign military occupation, DEMOCRACY IN LEBANON launches its website and dedicates it to the memory of the fallen martyrs and the heroism and unity of the Lebanese People. It can be found at www.democracyinlebanon.org. The site has a simple and uncluttered design. It loads quickly, and it contains a wealth of information and documents relevant to the cause of democracy and peace in Lebanon.

"Democracy in Lebanon" is an independent, nongovernmental grass-root movement dedicated to promoting the democratic potential of the Lebanese People in an open and decentralized society. An all volunteer coalition of Lebanese organizations and individuals with various religious, educational and social backgrounds working to promote Peace, Democracy and Prosperity in Lebanon.

The "Democracy in Lebanon" family of organizations consists of three entities: the Center for Democracy in Lebanon (primarily focuses on policy, strategy, education and advocacy on important national issues), Citizens for Democracy in Lebanon (primarily educates voters on the positions, records, views, and qualifications of public officials or candidates for public office) and DemocracyinLebanon.org (primarily helps members get acquainted with officials or candidates who reflect our values).

Democracy in Lebanon supports, strengthens and enhances the aspiration of the Lebanese People to be governed by a secular and democratic government of their own. Working to find solutions for political, economical and social problems facing the Lebanese society, its mission is to conceptualize, develop, and implement public policies to:
1) protect the Lebanese People's right to live in a free and democratic society and to be represented by a government of the people,
2) preserve and enhance freedoms of expression, freedom of association and freedom of worship,
3) defend the citizen's right to privacy and open access to government,
4) alert the citizens to developing situations, raise their awareness about the consequences of policies and engage them to act when their action is needed, and
5) advance other democratic values in a new and increasingly integrated and interactive society.

The website will regularly publish editorials and educated opinions by its members or invited guests, and will host an open forum for debate and discussions dealing with the issues of peace, democracy and prosperity in Lebanon.

In the near future, the Center for Democracy in Lebanon (CDL) will announce on the internet the details of a prized writing contest among the Lebanese youths. The topics will cover issues of importance to the mission of the CDL.
